Folsom’s golf store has a prominent new location, provocative new name and new all-encompassing approach.

It now backs up to Highway 50 off Iron Point Road, is called iFit Golf and, true to its name, provides services from club fitting to fitness screening.

Owner Bobby Siravo visualized a one-stop golf shop when moving a mile to a more spacious location late last year. He needed a name to match, and iFit Golf was born.

“It encompasses everything we do,” Siravo said.

Formerly Golf Etc. since opening in 2004, the store previously offered club fitting, repair and retail sales. Now, it has 5,000 square feet, including two glassen closed hitting bays adorned with back-lit photos of Pebble Beach’s Nos. 7 and 18. With director of instruction Kevin Estrella incorporating fitness assessment into his lesson plans, iFit Golf has something for every golfer.

The fitness angle introduced by Estrella, a Titleist golf fitness certified and Golfing Machine authorized instructor, is particularly intriguing. Where most teaching pros focus on technique and equipment, knowing the dynamics of each person’s body is paramount to progress, he said.

Players then can either work to improve their physical shortcomings, Estrella said, or at least better understand them as they relate to possible limitations in their swing.

“I hear all the time people say, ‘I’ve taken a lot of lessons, and that’s the first time I’ve heard that,’ which makes me think I’m on the right track,” Estrella said.

Brandt Myas, a firefighter nearing retirement who wants to improve on his average high-90s score, recently was put through the ringer. His shoulders, hips, knees and ankles were tested for strength and flexibility through a series of squats, lunges and rotations.

Myas’ shoulders, the tests revealed, had limited mobility. As a result, he tilted forward in an attempt to complete his backswing, a move that fostered a slice. The findings made perfect sense to Myas, 53, an avid cyclist who has suffered shoulder injuries in multiple crashes.

“I knew I had some injuries, and because of my age … let’s just say he’s trying to develop a swing to fit my life experiences,” Myas said.

The physical screening is part of Estrella’s regular routine. He asks permission, he said, but hasn’t had anyone say no. He said he’s learned not to prejudge – age and outward appearance are only starting points; the tests tell the tale.

Myas was fitted for, and bought clubs before seeing Estrella, making him the type of customer Siravo envisioned when making the move.

“Lessons turn into club sales; club sales turn into lessons,” said Siravo, the 2009 Northern California PGA Club Fitter of the Year.

Siravo graduated from Mira Loma High School, competed collegiately for San Jose State, won the Sacramento County title twice and tried the professional mini tours for several years. He worked as an assistant and teaching pro before spending a year caddying on the PGA Tour for Kevin Sutherland.

He’s now focused on helping players like Myas. What’s good for Myas is good for Siravo’s business.

“We’re giving people a reason to start coming back,” he said.
